Broke, Determined, and In Love: Our Entrepreneurial Rollercoaster
CoupleyFit isn’t just a business success story—it’s a story of grit, partnership, and staying true to your values. Founded by Kurt and Deanna Mangum just three months after their wedding, Cupply Fit has grown from casual bootcamps at Kiwanis Park in Tempe, Arizona, to becoming a leader in holistic wellness.
It all started with $10-$15 bootcamps, where Kurt and Deanna built a real sense of community. They handed out branded water bottles, sold merch, and even captured sessions with drone footage—all while holding down full-time jobs. Kurt’s background in professional football and Deanna’s experience in the food and beverage industry gave them a unique edge, blending physical fitness with a focus on overall wellness.
What really set them apart was the creation of their SWAN philosophy—Sleep, Water, Activity, and Nutrition. They noticed that clients needed more than just workout plans; they needed a complete health reset. SWAN became the foundation of their approach, helping them shift from small group training to larger corporate wellness programs that could reach more people and make a bigger impact.
But it hasn’t been an easy road. Even after earning recognition at South by Southwest and getting six-figure contract offers, they faced some tough moments. They nearly lost their home to foreclosure, pawned sentimental items like Kurt’s gold chain, sold sneakers and designer clothes, and even considered selling Deanna’s wedding ring to keep the business alive.
What’s impressive is how they handled those challenges. When offered a big-money deal from a company whose values didn’t align with theirs, they walked away—choosing integrity over a quick payout. It was a hard decision, but it reinforced their commitment to running a business rooted in authenticity and purpose.
Eight years in, the impact of Cupply Fit is undeniable. One of their early clients, Maricela, lost 80 pounds in a year and inspired wellness changes throughout her family and workplace. That’s the ripple effect Kurt and Deanna were aiming for—creating "generational health" where positive habits get passed down through families and communities.
At the heart of Cupply Fit’s success is the partnership between Kurt and Deanna. Their story is proof that true wellness isn’t just about fitness—it’s about physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual balance. And when you’re building that kind of life with the right partner, the journey becomes that much more rewarding.
